At a glance

  • A holiday loan is a SACC ($300 to $2,000) or a MACC ($2,001 to $5,000) used for a seasonal cost, such as gifts, travel to family or January school costs. The rules are the same as any other regulated loan.
  • SACC fees are capped by law at 20% upfront plus 4% a month, and you’ll never repay more than double what you borrowed.
  • Your repayments are set before you sign, so you can plan them around the new year and the start of the school term.
  • Centrelink income counts toward a SACC once it reaches $800 a fortnight.
  • We don’t lend for rent, mortgage repayments, groceries or everyday living costs, and that includes the holiday food shop.

What a holiday loan actually is

“Holiday loan” describes what the money is for. At CashLab, it means one of two regulated loans, with the same checks and fee caps as any other loan we offer.

SACC

$300 to $2,000

Small Amount Credit Contract

Most holiday costs, like a few gifts, a flight home or a car service before a long drive. Centrelink income accepted from $800 a fortnight.

MACC

$2,001 to $5,000

Medium Amount Credit Contract

Bigger costs, such as travel for the whole family, for applicants with employment income of at least $500 a week.

Both are covered by the National Consumer Credit Protection Act 2009, so the fees are capped and the lender has to confirm the repayments fit your budget before approving anything. Our guides to SACC loans and MACC loans explain each one in detail, and if the cost can’t wait, see our page on same day loans.

How to plan a holiday loan you can pay off

  1. Add up the whole seasonList gifts, travel and events, then add the January costs that follow, like school uniforms, shoes and books. Seeing the full figure stops a second loan in February.
  2. Borrow only the gapPut any savings toward the total first and borrow the difference. On a SACC, every extra dollar attracts the same 20% upfront and 4% a month.
  3. Pick a term that fits your payA shorter term means fewer monthly fees on a SACC, as long as the repayments still leave enough for your bills. Our calculator shows both.
  4. Apply before the rushApplying in early December gives time for the assessment, which includes 90 days of bank statements, before you need the money.

A holiday loan can make sense when

  • It covers a one-off seasonal cost with a clear end date
  • The repayments still fit once January bills arrive
  • You know the exact amount you need
  • It will be repaid before the next big cost of the year

It’s worth holding off when

  • You’d need another loan to keep up with the repayments
  • You’re already repaying another small loan
  • The money would go on everyday bills or groceries

What a holiday loan costs

The law caps what any lender can charge for a small loan, whatever it’s used for. On a SACC, the most a lender can charge is a one-off fee of 20% of the loan, plus 4% of the loan for every month of the term. For $1,000 borrowed in December and repaid over four months, the maximum looks like this:

For $2,001 to $5,000, a MACC can carry a $400 establishment fee and interest of up to 48% per annum on the remaining balance. Either way, borrow only the amount your holiday plan needs, and check the repayments against your January budget before you apply.

$1,000 SACC over 4 months Maximum
Establishment fee (20% of $1,000) $200
Monthly fees ($40 a month for 4 months) $160
Total repaid $1,360

This example uses the maximum fees allowed. The real figures for your loan appear in your contract before you sign. Total SACC repayments are also capped at twice the amount borrowed, even if a payment is missed.

Who can apply

  • You’re 18 or over and live in Australia
  • You have regular income paid into an Australian bank account in your own name. Wages, self-employment and Centrelink payments all count, and Centrelink income needs to total at least $800 a fortnight for a SACC
  • For a MACC, you have employment income of at least $500 a week
  • The repayments fit your budget. On a SACC, they’re limited to 10% of your net income, which keeps enough aside for everything else

No payslip? Bank statements usually do the same job, and our guide to getting a loan without a payslip explains how.

What you’ll need

  • Photo ID
  • 90 days of bank statements from your own Australian account
  • A mobile number and email address
  • Proof of income, if we ask for it

How to check a lender before you apply

Loan offers pick up in the lead-up to Christmas, and not every lender follows the rules. Before you apply anywhere:

  • Search ASIC’s professional register to confirm they hold a credit licence or are an authorised credit representative
  • Check they publish a Target Market Determination, which sets out who the loan is designed for
  • Confirm they’re a member of AFCA, the free complaints service for financial products
  • Be wary of “no credit check” or “guaranteed approval”. Licensed lenders must assess whether you can afford the repayments, so one that skips this step may not be operating within Australian credit law

What people use holiday loans for

Most holiday loans cover a cost that lands at the end of the year, or the bills that follow straight after.

Christmas gifts

Presents for the family, bought in one go instead of spread across credit cards.

Travel to family

Flights or fuel to get home for Christmas, booked before prices climb.

Back-to-school costs

Uniforms, shoes, books and devices due before the school term starts in late January.

A car service before a road trip

New tyres or a service before a long summer drive.

Pet boarding and vet care

Kennel fees or a vaccination update before you go away.

A holiday booking

The deposit on a caravan site, cabin or short family break.

CashLab doesn’t lend for rent, mortgage repayments, groceries or other everyday living costs, including food shopping for the holidays.

Ways to spend less before you borrow

A few of these can shrink the amount you need, or remove the need for a loan altogether.

Layby for gifts

Many shops will hold gifts for a small deposit while you pay off the rest in the weeks before Christmas. Ask about any layby fees first.

Pre-owned gifts

Our Midland and Geraldton stores sell certified pre-owned jewellery and luxury goods, so you can browse the shop before you borrow.

A Centrelink advance

If you receive a Centrelink payment, you may be able to get part of it early, interest-free, through Services Australia.

Free financial counselling

The National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 can help you build a holiday budget at no cost.
